Various red cross, chaplain, veterinarian, medic (sanitäter) and stretcher bearer (krankenträger) funeral cards from the Great War. These were distributed at the funerals of soldiers killed at the front, similar to programs at funerals today. Typically a Catholic tradition, most cards originate in Bavaria.

Reservist and medical soldier in Res. Inf. 161. Suffered a hero’s death for his county November 11, 1916 in the hot battles of the Somme. Born in Neundorf on June 16, 1888, the deceased was a good son to his parents, his siblings, a loving brother, and to his comrades in arms a true comrade. Because of his excellent character he was in the respected and loved in the community by both young and old. Brave, but with a heavy heart, at the beginning of the war he went into the field to fight for the German fatherland. He had already happily survived many dangers when on that fateful day, as so often; in the course of his work as a paramedic he joined a wounded man when a fatal bullet hit him. His comrades buried him, far from loving home, where he awaits the day of resurrection with many other heroes. In bitter grief and sadness we mourn the beloved dead. A great consolation is given us the hope and confidence that God made he who died a martyr in Christian spirit for the earthly homeland and in the heavenly fatherland he is rewarded with the victor's crown of eternal life. |
